Tbilisi (GEO)- Sheki (AZE)- Vandam (AZE)
August 9, 2014
We woke up early today we need to cross the Azerbaijan border. We took the mountainous one and when we arrived around 2pm the line was not that long. They separate Graham and myself with the driver- Young. Both Graham and crossed the border on foot, and Young took the car for the custom. There are a lot of posts online saying that Azerbaijan police are corrupted…etc, but from our experience they are all very friendly. When Young finished the border crossing the border all of them smile and say “Welcome to Azerbaijan!”
We drove down the mountain and saw lots of dried up riverbeds. I bet in Spring time these mountain ranges must be very serene.
Our GPS took us to a super bumpy rocky road between () and () and we drove 5 mph on it for over an hour. Lots of precious time wasted.
We arrived at Sheki but there is no rooms available in the entire mountain town. We were starving so we grab some random Donar Kebab. Along the way walking around Kenneth got very popular, whole bunch of Taxi driver admires Kenneth tattoo. And a very young man walked by and say “Welcome to Azerbaijan!” to us. This country has lots of very nice and warm people!
We kept droving and finally find a Otel. It is a bit more expensive (around 90 AZ Manat for the 3 person room, breakfast included), but it got a gigantic pool so we decided to take it. After a long day driving in intense heat with no AC, the pool is like a godsend.
We instantly jumped in.
For dinner we ate at the hotel by the pool. We ordered lamb kebab and Lamb on a Iron Disc. Both are absolutely Excellent! Too bad its so dark we can’t take a picture of the food.
